SWEDEN REGISTER FOURTH CONSECUTIVE WIN - 12 SEP 2009
The Swedish team ended the tournament on another high, beating Estonia by 74 runs. Sweden returned to the Ropa Valley 1 ground for today's match, the same ground where they lost the first game of the tournament in a low-scoring thriller against Greece. Despite the consistently low scores on today's pitch, Adnan Raza had no hesitation in opting to bat first when he won the toss. Rather disappointingly, Sweden were bowled out in only 38 overs by the Estonians. Thanks mainly to Azam Khalil (40) and contributions from Sanaullah Habibzai (21) and skipper Adnan Raza (23*), the team managed to put together 146 runs in the end, which was about par for this track. Because Sweden was bowled out well before their alloted 50 overs, Estonia needed to bat out 6 overs before lunch. In those 6 overs, the Swedish attack bowlers, Hassan Zaigham and Aman Khan, made sure that they came out on top, leaving Estonia at a precarious 18-4 claiming two wickets each. When the players returned from their lunch, the Swedish bowlers took only another 14 overs to bowl their opposition out for 72 runs, with Azam Khalil finishing with his third 4-wicket haul of the tournament. For his 40 runs and 4 wickets, Azam Khalil was named Man of the Match.
Greece beat the Czech Republic to maintain their unbeaten record in the tournament and thereby claim the title. Sweden, the only team that challenged Greece, ended up on a more than respectable second place, and had it not been for their defeat to Greece by a mere three balls to spare, Sweden could well have been the winners of their inaugural ICC tournament. Overall, Sweden played some splendid cricket over the 6 days, and left a strong impression with all teams and officials alike. As a team they recorded the highest score of the tournament (348-9 vs the Czech Rep), and bowled out the opposition for the lowest total (Turkey 41 all out). Individually, Chris Tebbutt registered the highest score with his 108 against the Czech Rep being the only hundred of the tournament, and Hassan Zaigham registered the best bowling figures with his 6-17 against Turkey. In addition to that Azam Khalil showed why he was awarded Best All Rounder in Sweden 2009, by scoring 90 runs in his three innings, and also ending as leading wicket taker with his 16 wickets in 5 matches. The European cricket community will now know that Sweden will be a force to contend with in the future.
SWEDEN ANNIHILATE TURKEY TO REGISTER THIRD WIN - 11 SEP 2009
The Swedish team continued its impressive form today, by beating Turkey by 8 wickets. The Swedes completely dominated proceedings from the word go, and won the match before lunch had been taken. After a slight delay in the morning, due to a wet patch beside the pitch, Turkey won the toss and elected to bat first - a decision they would rue in hindsight. Hassan Zaigham and Azam Khalil bowled the opposition out for a meagre 41 runs in 21.3 overs. Hassan took 6 wickets for 17 runs, the best bowling figures of the tournament, and Azam got his second successive 4 wicket haul with impressive figures of 4 wickets for 3 runs. Sweden chased down the target in only 10 overs, losing two wickets in the process. Hassan Zaigham was duly named Man of the Match.

CHRIS TEBBUTT 108 LEADS SWEDEN TO MASSIVE 348 AT LUNCH - 9 SEP 2009
The Czech Republic won the toss and asked Sweden to bat first on a hot and humid day in Corfu. Sweden lost its top three for only 40-odd runs, but that was as good as it would get for the Czech bowlers. Enter Azam Khalil and Chris Tebbutt. Azam gave Sweden some much needed momentum with a quick 50, but thereafter it was the Chris Tebbutt show. Aided by steady contributions from the lower middle order, Chris got a splendid 108 (the first hundred of the tournament) and lead Sweden to a mighty 348 for 9 in their 50 overs (the highest score of the tournament).
SWEDEN BEAT BULGARIA BY 8 WICKETS - 8 SEP 2009
Sweden registered its first win in the tournament when it beat Bulgaria by 8 wickets. Having lost the toss and being sent into field first, the two opening bowlers Hassan Zaigham and Aman Khan followed up their good performance against Greece with another tight opening spell, taking regular wickets and giving nothing away. Their example was followed by the other bowlers, and eventually captain Adnan Raza cleaned up the tail with three quick wickets to bowl the opposition out for a meagre 88. In reply, Sweden lost Shahid Mustafa early, but a solid partnership between Hassan Zaigham and Piyal Rahman lead them to the brink of victory. Piyal top scored with 54 not out and was duly awarded Man of the Match. Having got off the mark in the tournament, Sweden will now face the Czech Republic tomorrow, who are undefeated thus far. Read the ICC Europe match report here, and see the full scorecard here.

Having won the toss, captain Adnan Raza opted to bat first on the Notts artificial turf surface. In bowling friendly conditions, the batsmen struggled to gain any momentum through the innings. In the end the team was bowled out for 137 in 44.1 overs, with Sanaullah Habibzai top scoring with 31 not out. In reply Greece started very carefully and at the half way stage they were 76 for 4. Despite some spirited bowling and fielding, Sweden fell narrowly short as Greece won by 3 wickets with only 3 balls to spare. See the full scorecard here.
First Round Results:
Sweden 137 (44.1 ov); Greece 141-7 (49.3 ov)

AWARDS AND STATISTICS - 2 SEP 2009
All batting and bowling statistics from the National League 2009 have now been uploaded on to the website. Based on these statistics the SCF Executive Council have decided to award the following players for their performances in 2009:
Best Batsman: Afzaal Virk, Landskrona (529 runs at 44,08)
Afzaal Virk topped the run-scoring chart for 2009, being the only player to have scored more than 500 runs in the season, and the only player along with Azam Khalil to have scored two hundreds in the season. He also showed that he performs when it matters the most, with a splendid match-winning hundred in the National League Final. There is no doubt that Afzaal Virk is the Best Batsman in 2009.
Best All Rounder: Azam Khalil, Jinnah White (426 runs at 42,60, and 36 wickets at 10,31)
With two 100s, two 4-wicket hauls and three 5-wicket hauls, Azam Khalil dominated the Swedish cricket scene in 2009. A proven performer with bat and ball, he was a match-winner for Jinnah White throughout the season, and was also the best Swedish player in the Royal Nordic Cup. Azam Khalil is thereby the Best All Rounder in 2009.
Best Bowler: Bright Behura, Uppsala (29 wickets at 13,24, economy rate of 4,04)
Second only to Azam Khalil in the wicket column, Bright Behura played a key role in leading Uppsala to the National League Final with his disciplined line-and-length medium pace bowling. By bowling both economically and taking plenty of wickets, Bright Behura has highlighted the importance of keeping it simple and sticking to the basics.
The players will receive their awards at the SCF Annual General Meeting later this year.
AWARDS SWEDISH NATIONAL LEAGUE 2009 - 18 AUG 2009
The awards fo Best Batsman, Best Bowler and Best All Rounder of the SCF League 2009 have not yet been decided as we are still waiting for some umpires to submit their scorecards to the Board. SWEDEN SECURE 3RD PLACE IN ROYAL NORDIC CUP - 23 JUL 2009
Sweden participated in the Royal Nordic Cup at Svanholm Cricket Ground, Denmark, on 11th and 12th July. The team secured the 3rd place in the Twenty/20 competition with a 50% success rate. Sweden lost its first match against Norway by about 20 runs, but followed that up with a confident win against Finland. This left the team needing a win against Denmark to qualify for the final. Despite a spirited effort from the Swedish players, Denmark proved too strong and chased down a target of 115 for the loss of 5 wickets. Sweden finished the tournament in winning fashion with a resounding victory against Finland to secure the 3rd place. In the final, Norway beat Denmark to become the undefeated winners of the inaugural Royal Nordic Cup.
All the Swedish players performed well, with Azam Khalil standing out as the pick of the players. Well done Sweden, we are looking forward to more victories in September in Greece.
